Abstract
The present study is designed to determine whether the use of rewards has an effective role in
motivating students to avoid spelling errors and improve their writing abilities in English language
classes. In order to carry out this study, we opted for the use of a descriptive survey method by
means of two questionnaires. Indeed, two questionnaires were administrated to sixty-five (65) first
year students and five (5) writing teachers. The use of a quantitative method allows us to gather a
big amount of data which is then analyzed by descriptive statistical method which that of the rule of
three. This research is based on Skinner’s Behavioural Learning Theory. The results of the study
confirmed the hypothesis that both teachers and students hold a positive attitude towards the use of
rewards to motivate students to avoid spelling errors and enhance their writing skills in the
department of English at Mouloud Mammeri University of Tizi Ouzou.
