| dc.description.abstract | This dissertation is a comparative study between American playwright Tennessee Williams’ Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1955) and the Nigerian playwright Wole Soyinka’s Death and the King’s Horseman (1975). Our main purpose in this research paper is to study how modern tragedy is depicted in the selected plays and to examine the analogies between them. Relaying on Arthur miller’s theory Tragedy and the Common Man (1949), we have deduced that the two plays depict the tragic fate of the common man. Our discussion is divided into three chapters. The first chapter deals with the tragic heroes as ordinary people and their struggle for dignity, whereas the second chapter discusses two other characters as anti-heroes and their failure. Finally, the third chapter tackles the effect of social dominance over the main characters in a modern world. | en |
