Abstract
The current study is mainly concerned with the investigation of the grammatical errors
made by secondary school learners’ in their writing compositions. It aims at identifying
the types of grammatical errors that are most frequent in learners’ exam compositions
of the second term English exam and determine the sources behind these errors. In
order to conduct this study, we have analyzed a sample of 70 exam papers written by
third year students in the academic year 2018/2019. We followed the procedure of
error analysis adopted by Pits Corder, namely collection, identification, description and
explanation. To analyze the data collected, we adopted the mixed method approach,
combining both quantitative and qualitative procedure of data gathering and data
analysis. The results obtained reveals that third year students make different types of
errors in different categories while they write. These identified errors are mainly due to
the lack of the knowledge of the target language, overgeneralization and incomplete
application of the English language rules and/or interference from previously learned
languages.
