EFL Students Attitudes towards AI- Based Self-Assessment. The Case of Master Students at the Department of English at MMUTO.

| dc.description.abstract | The research investigates Algerian EFL learners’ perspectives on utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) for self-assessment, drawing upon the theoretical framework of self-assessment, AI technology, self-determination, and metacognition. Rooted in Boud’s (1995) concepts of ‘Enhancing Learning through Self-Assessment’, and informed by the World Travel and Tourism Council’s (2024) ‘Introduction to Artificial Intelligence Technology’, the study explores how these technologies intersect with learners’ self-determination and metacognitive processes. Employing a mixed-method approach, the study gathers data through a questionnaire conducted with Master degree students in language studies at the Department of English at Mouloud Mammeri University of Tizi Ouzou, as it includes interviews with EFL teachers. The aims of this research are twofold: first, to identify the factors that influence EFL student’s attitudes towards using AI for self-assessment; and second, to explore the specific benefits that EFL students perceive in using AI tools for self-assessment. The findings reveal that the vast majority of students are indeed highly familiar with and frequently use AI not only for self-assessment but for a multitude of other academic purposes. | |
