dc.description.abstractThis dissertation aims at investigating the use of ludic activities in the early age of education, and their impact on enhancing the pupils’ speaking abilities. Two public primary schools have been selected to achieve this purpose: Laimech Ali of Tizi-Ouzou and Freres khlifi of Draa El Mizan. The theory of Brewster, Ellis, and Girard, developed in their book; The Primary English Teacher’s Guide (2004), is the framework upon which this research is based. In fact, those three writers have focused their work on the use of ludic activities in teaching English as a foreign language to young learners: pupils in primary school, and they wrote a book in which they demonstrated the importance of this method of teaching and learning a second language. The mixed methods approach is adopted, which consists of combining both quantitative and qualitative methods for data collection and analysis. A questionnaire along with an interview are used to gather the necessary data. The interview is carried out with two teachers, and the questionnaire is administrated to fifty-five pupils. Thus, the quantitative data is analysed by statistical tools, and the qualitative data by qualitative content analysis. According to the findings, ludic activities, as a strategy of teaching English language at the primary level, is among the effective ones used so far. Learners, through playing, increase their speaking abilities in English language efficiently, for throughout the game, they communicate, integrate, and cooperate unconsciously, spontaneously, and voluntarily just because they are in their own territories as children. It means that they are engaging in such a process by default, and they use all their effort to succeed through learning by playing, for they are instinctively prepared for that. Furthermore, according to Brewster et al. (2004), this method helps both teachers and pupils to accomplish the process of teaching and learning a foreign language in an agreeable manner.
