Romanticizing Behavioural Anomalies and Ideologies in Netflix Series: Critical Discourse Analysis

| dc.description.abstract | The current dissertation is concerned with romanticising behavioural anomalies in Netflix series. It is intended to determine the type of language used in the Netflix series to romanticise and glamorise some behavioural anomalies and ideologies, as well as investigate whether students of the Department of English at Mouloud Maameri University are influenced by the multiple romanticised ideologies and attitudes conveyed through the English language. The study follows the theoretical model that Fairclough (1989) suggested in his approach to Critical Discourse Analysis, mainly his textual analysis. To conduct the research, we opted for the analysis of six conversations taken from two Netflix series ’13 Reasons Why’ and ‘You’. We also opted for a questionnaire designed for the English department students at MMUTO. The questionnaires were administered to 100 students who are familiar with the Netflix platform. The study relied on the mixed-method approach. The qualitative data is analysed through qualitative content analysis, and the quantitative data is analysed using the Rule of Three. Furthermore, the obtained results reveal that the two Netflix series use persuasive language combining negative and positive attitudes and hyponyms to demonstrate and romanticise abnormal behaviours. Moreover, data also show that the language used in the Netflix series impacts the participants’ beliefs and that students are partially aware that romanticised ideologies and attitudes are conveyed linguistically through English. | |
