The current study investigates the importance of students’ self-confidence in enhancing their speaking skill. It is done under the social cognitive theory of self-efficacy proposed by Albert Bandura (1977). This research is centred around three main objectives, the first objective is based on proving the role of self-confidence in developing students’speaking skill especially the first year students at the department of English at Mouloud Mammeri University of Tizi- Ouzo. Second, it consists in raising students’ and teachers awareness about the importance and effectiveness of self-confidence. Third, it deals with the main causes behind students’ lack of self-confidence and its influence on students’ speaking skill. To reach these aims, we have opted for the use of the mixed- method research. In order to collect the relevant data for this research we have opted for the use of two main tools.A questionnaire is delivered to 100 students and a twelve Classroom observation sessions. The statistical method SPSS is used for the quantitative data analysis while qualitative content analyses is adopted to interpret the results of classroom observation. The obtained results have shown that high level of selfconfidence enhance first year students’ speaking abilities. The majority of the students have confirmed that they feel shy and afraid of making mistakes in class; thus these psychological factorsinfluence negatively their self-confidence which later on affects their oral performance. Finally the results of classroom observation have revealed that self-confidence plays a major role in students’ academic achievement.en
