| dc.description.abstract | This study examines soft power within China's strategy in Africa, using West Africa as a case study. China emerged as a major global power in the post- Cold War era and has based its foreign policy—particularly in Africa—on the concept of soft power, which Joseph Nye defines as "the ability to attract and influence without coercion". From an international perspective, Africa is seen as a rich reservoir of natural resources and a strategic area of geopolitical and economic importance. This has made it a hotbed of competition among major world powers. At the same time, the continent faces development challenges that expose it to external intervention and increase its dependence on international support. This study focuses on how China employs soft power in West Africa, a strategic region where multiple international interests intersect, due to its wealth of natural resources and its geographical location stretching from the Sahara Desert to the Atlantic Ocean—making it a vital link between the northern, central, and southern parts of the continent. However, this Chinese approach faces several challenges, including weak infrastructure and institutional systems in some countries, growing criticism of China’s “soft diplomacy” as being self- serving, and intensifying competition from other international powers such as the United States, Russia, and the European Union. Despite these challenges, the prospects for Chinese soft power remain promising. It represents a strategic pillar for strengthening the China-Africa partnership within the framework of South-South cooperation, with the potential to develop more balanced models that consider mutual interests and promote sustainable development on the continent. | |
