    Motherhood in Kate Chopin’s TheAwakening (1899) andBuchiEmechita’s The Joys of Motherhood (1979): A comparative study

    This dissertation is a comparative study between The Awakening (1899) by The American writer kate chopin and The Joys of Motherhood (1979) by the African writer Buchi Emecheta . The central issue of this comparison is to show how motherhood is portrayed in relation to societal expectations by comparing mother figures in these two novels written in two different periods of time .The study focuses on the depiction of woman's oppression , and their physical as well as emotional suffering caused by the strict traditions and patriarchal regime in the American society of the late 19th Century and the African society of the late 20th Century .To accomplish our goal ,we have adopted a feminist literary theory which is Adrianne Rich Of Women Born : Motherhood Institution and Experience (1976) . The analysis shows that the two novels share many similarities and one common objective which is to reinforce and encourage women's creating new identities outside of social norms and patriarchal regime. Besides, it shows how two closer literature may produce similar production
