تتناول هذه المذكرة دراسة تحليلية وتاريخية لشخصية القديس أوغسطين، باعتباره إحدى أبرز الشخصيات الفكرية والدينية في تاريخ المسيحية، وواحدًا من المفكرين الذين تركوا أثرًا بالغًا في تشكيل الفكر اللاهوتي والفلسفي الغربي. انطلقت الدراسة من تتبع السياق الجغرافي والثقافي الذي نشأ فيه أوغسطين بشمال إفريقيا، وتوقفت عند محطات حياته الأساسية، منذ ولادته بمدينة طاغست سنة 354م، مرورًا بتكوينه العلمي في قرطاج، وتأثره بالمانوية، وصولًا إلى اعتناقه المسيحية في ميلانو سنة 387م، تحت تأثير شخصيات محورية مثل والدته مونيكا وأمبروسيوس أسقف ميلانو.
تم تقسيم المذكرة إلى ثلاثة فصول رئيسية: خُصّص الأول لدراسة النشأة والتكوين، والثاني لتحوّله الديني ودوره كراعٍ وأسقف، والثالث لتحليل أعماله الفكرية وأثرها في التاريخ المسيحي وقد تم الاعتماد على منهج تاريخي تحليلي وسردي، شمل دراسة النصوص الأصلية لأوغسطين، وخاصة الاعترافات ومدينة الله، إلى جانب مراجعة الأدبيات التاريخية والفكرية ذات الصلة.
خلصت الدراسة إلى أن شخصية أوغسطين تمثّل نقطة التقاء بين الفلسفة الكلاسيكية واللاهوت المسيحي، وأن فكره ظل مؤثرًا في العقيدة المسيحية والنقاشات اللاهوتية لقرون متتالية، مما يجعل دراسته ضرورة لفهم أحد أعمدة الفكر الديني في العالم الغربي.

This dissertation presents a historical and analytical study of the figure of Saint Augustine, one of the most influential thinkers and theologians in the history of Christianity. Augustine played a central role in shaping Western theological and philosophical thought. The study begins by examining the geographical and cultural context of his upbringing in North Africa and traces the key stages of his life—from his birth in Thagaste in 354 AD, through his education in Carthage, his early adherence to Manichaeism, and ultimately his conversion to Christianity in Milan in 387 AD under the influence of pivotal figures such as his mother Monica and Bishop Ambrose.
The dissertation is structured into three main chapters: the first explores Augustine’s early life and intellectual formation; the second analyzes his religious transformation and ecclesiastical role as a bishop; and the third evaluates his major writings and their long-term impact on Christian thought. The study employs a combination of historical, analytical, and narrative methodologies, relying on primary texts—especially Confessions and The City of God—as well as a range of historical and theological scholarship.
The research concludes that Augustine represents a vital bridge between classical philosophy and Christian theology, and that his thought remains a foundational reference in Christian doctrine and theological debates across the centuries.
