Abstract
The present research work is a case study that explores the issue of motivation in learning
English as a foreign language at Brothers Hamdi Secondary School one of the Algerian
secondary school .The study aims at checking whether the teachers motivate third year
foreign languages learners to speak in English during English class and what are the
strategies that they use .This research is conducted by using two research tools .The first is an
interview; interviews are conducted teachers and the second is a classroom observation to
check students if they speak English and how teacher contribute to make it work that took
place in a third year foreign language classroom. This research shows according to
Dornyei’s extended framework (1994) and Williams and Burden’s motivational framework
(1997) that teachers of Brothers Hamdi Secondary School motivate their learners to speak
using different strategies to generate initial motivation and then maintaining and protecting it
on three different levels the language level ,the learning level, and the learning situation level
and this according to Dornyei’s Motivational Framework1994. Then, the factors that affect
learners motivation; among them the teacher, the learning environment and the nature of
interaction and all this in relation to Williams and Burden’s motivational Framework
.concerning the students some of them like speaking and sharing their thoughts using English
,but some others hesitate to because of lacking self –confidence or having a week level.
