Abstract
This study investigates private school EFL teachers’ practices that aim at enhancing
students’ communication skills to form lifelong learners. It attempts to determine whether the
teachers’ communicative practices develop students’ lifelong learning. The present work is
conducted at three private schools which are Eco-mode, Ecoternel and Bridge Way World in
Tizi-Ouzou, relying on Mezirow Transformative learning Theory (2000). A mixed methods
approach, which combines both quantitative and qualitative methods, is used to interpret the
data. As data collection instruments, we have relied on a questionnaire and interviews. On
the one hand, the questionnaire is intended to twenty private school teachers. On the other
hand, interviews are conducted with both teachers and students of the same schools for the
sake of gathering more supports of the data collected through the questionnaires. Statistical
Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) is used to analyse the results gathered from the closeended
questions while Qualitative Content Analysis (QCA) is used to interpret the results of
the open-ended questions and those reached from the interviews. The conclusion derived
from this research demonstrates that teachers recognise the importance of communication
for learners. Furthermore, they are aware of the relation between the communicative
activities and Lifelong Learning. However, their practices do not show that they teach
communication for Lifelong learning purposes. In addition to that, it is revealed that most
teachers’ practices enhance learners’ communication skill but they do not lead learners to
become lifelong learners.
